Summary
I’m not even sure where to begin to summarize this story! Eden returns home after her early-morning run to find that her key to the front door no longer works. When the door opens, it’s her who opens the door. The woman claims to be Eden Fox. Harrison Wolfe, her husband, comes to the door, claims this woman is his wife, and asks her to leave their property. Eden and Harrison had just moved to Hope Falls, a small town in Cornwall, England, a few weeks ago. They moved into a house called Spy Glass that sits at the top of a hill overlooking Hope Falls. Spy Glass already has a history and a mystery attached to it. They were just getting settled in, and Eden didn’t know anyone yet. Eden goes mad and commits suicide.
Detective Birdie arrives at Hope Falls, and her first day as lead detective is to investigate Eden’s case. But Birdie has her own history with the small town and Spy Glass. We are taken on multiple twists and turns and loopy loops as Birdie and Sergeant Carter solve the mystery of Eden’s disappearance.
My Review
Honestly, you have to go into this book not knowing much. It is a WILD ride, and I am here for it! I don’t read many mystery thrillers, but maybe I should, because this was excellent and so much fun to read! This review will contain no spoilers. But the cast of characters is played brilliantly in this story, and each one brings nuance and meaning. As with any small town story, there are secrets, and this town holds its fair share. It’s a love story, but not a romance. The love between a parent and their child is the most honest and pure love story there ever was, and that is at the root of this novel as well. That parent-child relationship is explored across all story lines.
It is excellent and full of “WHAT!?!?!” moments that make this an epic page turner. You will never see what’s coming. The characters are so well written, and their stories are intertwined so beautifully and horrifically! At the end, the mystery is solved, but not without sinister twists, heartfelt resolutions, and evil that comes out of nowhere!
🎧 I listened to the audiobook on Spotify, and it was really well done. I think I would have rather read it on paper, though, so that it would have been easier to go back and see if I actually read what I thought I read!
