Book Review: The God of the Woods

A Twisted Mystery That Will Keep You Guessing Until the Very End

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐½

I just finished reading The God of the Woods, and wow—what a ride! This messed-up mystery novel had me completely hooked from start to finish. The ending was so twisted and wicked, yet also disarmingly beautiful. For readers who have been disappointed by predictable storylines and want a thriller that spans decades of lies and secrets, this is it!

What It’s About

Barbara, a 13-year-old girl from the wealthy VanLaar family, goes missing from her family’s summer camp. The mystery deepens when investigators discover she isn’t the first VanLaar child to disappear—fourteen years earlier, her 8-year-old brother, Bear, vanished from the same property.

Judy, a rookie female investigator with sharp instincts and a talent for earning people’s trust, joins the team to find Barbara. As the investigation unfolds, a sprawling cast of characters reveals more than a decade of secrets, lies, family trauma, and self-preservation. It’s an absolutely gripping page-turner!

My Thoughts

This book reminded me of Gossip Girl in how it exposes the disturbing things wealthy people get away with. The lengths people go to protect their own interests is astounding. I think we’ve all found ourselves in situations where we gaslight ourselves into believing a lie is justified if it’s protecting someone—including ourselves. But is it ever okay to sacrifice someone else’s well-being to advance our own? Does lying actually protect the people we love, or does it cause them to grieve the wrong things?

The God of the Woods was a blast to read! You step into the shoes of a large cast of characters and travel through time between Bear’s disappearance and the present-day search for Barbara. The dual timeline was incredibly well executed. The ending is absolutely twisted, and I loved it! I never saw it coming—I was mad, disgusted, and seriously delighted by the truth of it all. Throughout the book, I never knew who to feel sorry for, whose innocence was being exploited, or who the actual villain was.

The book opens up the world of power and money, exploring how wealth creates misguided values and what people are willing to do when they fear losing everything. The novel features several compelling female characters—Alice, a grieving mother trapped in an unhappy marriage; TJ, an independent, no-nonsense camp director; Judy, a criminal investigator trying to prove herself in a male-dominated field; Louise, an abuse survivor caring for her brother while stuck in a toxic relationship; and Barbara, an unwanted child desperately seeking love.

The One Drawback

However, this book is very plot-driven. With such a large cast of characters, it’s difficult to go in-depth with any single one. I wish we had returned to Alice after she learned everything that unfolds (no spoilers!). It was already a long book, but I would have loved to dig deeper into TJ, Alice, and Barbara—maybe even the Peters too. A couple of characters seem to play inconsequential roles in the story, mainly Louise, Tracy, and John Paul. They never shined as potential suspects, just hinted at possibilities. Since I prefer strong character development in my stories, I took half a star off for this.

Audiobook Experience

🎧 I listened to the audiobook on Spotify, and it was very well done! I was glad to have the chapter titles available so I could track whose perspective I was following and when in the timeline each chapter took place. The print book apparently starts each chapter with time markers for all the periods covered, then highlights the relevant one—not having that visual reference in the audio made it harder to keep everything straight initially, but once the investigation picked up speed, it all clicked into place.

Final Verdict

Despite wishing for deeper character development, The God of the Woods is a thrilling mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The twisted ending alone makes it worth the read. If you love mysteries with unreliable narrators, shocking reveals, and complex family dynamics, pick this one up!
